vegetarian code

Posted on Apr 10th, 2006 by jodi : community grassroots inspirer jodi

I have been a vegetarian for 12 years (ever since the age of 12). I really never formulated why I didn't like eating meat. I didn't (don’t) like the taste, texture, thought... it sort of happened naturally.

Today my husband and I ordered some 'wraps' at Kauai. My husband is not a vegetarian and ordered some beef thing (I didn't know what he had ordered) and I ordered a veggie wrap. So, we sat outside looking over the sea, happy and hungry, and dished out the wraps marked with a sticker as veggie and whatever. I took a big bite, thought it tasted strange, wondered why they had put Soya in it this time (I don't like Soya 'meat' tastes too much like the real thing) and looked over at what François was eating. They had swapped our wraps!
I still feel sick. And that was at 2 this afternoon.
I couldn't believe I had just swallowed cow, after 12 years of never, ever having it pass my lips. I immediately felt so guilty and dirty.

Francois says I should acknowledge it and let it go. I can't stop feeling like I did something horrible. I wonder why I feel guilty when I didn't even do anything purposely.

Well, it's understandable that you don't feel good because you wouldn't choose to do that, but you should still know that you have nothing to feel bad about.  In the grand scheme of things the same amount of animal products was consumed as would have been if you both ate the “right” wraps.  But I hear ya on the feeling bad about it.  I once ordered a veg. pad thai with tofu, and they put chicken in instead of tofu.  I felt pretty sick and guilty when I figured it out.  (Sh)it happens, right?

I would just say a little prayer and thank the cow. I don't know what else to say to you. I can imagine that would be distressing. I was a veg for 7 years, but I do better as an omnivore. Even so, I eat very little meat. One time, I was given ravioli to eat and found out later that the filling was made from AFRICAN LION!!!! I thought I would faint, and I felt all wrong for days.

mmm, i very much doubt that you were actually given lion to eat. there is definately no lion meat farming going on here, and no-one in africa (to my knowledge) ever eats lion. I would be very surprized if indeed you have eaten lion, I know that lion hunters have to pay between $10 000 and $50 000 to hunt a lion here in South Africa. I am under the impression that even they do not eat their kills. - so i wouldn't worry too much - it's probably just someone teasing you, or someone who has been taken for a ride, or miss interpreted what was being served.

That would explain why it tasted like ground turkey. Yuck.

Man! Eating lion is a scary thought. hehehe. Thanks Stacie.
I think my stomach was a bit messed up after the encounter. But I think it was more the thought of it than the actual meat 'cause I had way to little for it to actually influence me. I'm still doubting if it was really meat or maybe just some soya (wishfull thinking).

Wow, interesting how our beliefs can effect us physically, huh?  Pretty good lesson!

Sorry to hear that you had a cow, er… hahaha… sorry, i'm in a weird mood.

Glad you're feeling better!

I agree with Mathew, Jodi, it wasn't your fault and of course, we will not be purely 100% vegan even if we eat vegan. It is about intention and direction and not about purity. eeeek, a lion! That is a scary thought because I can't imagine the sight of  such majestic creatures to be eaten and plus, my horoscope is lion. Don't eat me or my friends!!

Accidentally ordered a minipizza-thingy with meat once. Ate it to see what happened… and got nauseous. My gastrointestinal system wasn't used to rotting meat anymore.
A moist, body-temperature environment is perfect for rot bacteria… Yuck.
Apart from the hormones and GMO food they get, this is my main reason for not eating animals.
Also, it's a long way from the original life-giving energy of the sun that comes to us through our food…

It's amazing how inevitable this is. It happened to me just last week, and I was amazed by my internal conflict. But at twelve years, you've eliminated the demand of well over one thousand living creatures. I'm sure that cow would have appreciated how many of it's brothers and sisters you didn't eat.
And cows have great senses of humor.
